Abstract:Global bird populations are declining as a result of human activities. The objectives of this research are to characterize barriers to transdisciplinary integration of bird safe design into professional practice, and to identify opportunities to improve technical proficiency among relevant sectors. This study employs a design studio methodology to inform the development of practical and accessible tools for practitioners and governments. Findings of these studio initiatives were informed through a combination of policy, geospatial, and literature analyses, case study examinations, field research, as well as an online survey circulated to relevant professionals across North America, and an interactive online workshop. This research underscores the effectiveness of co-creative designbased methodology in bridging disciplinary siloes in response to complex socioecological challenges, such as mitigating bird collisions and biodiversity loss in cities. To restore ecological networks and sustain wildlife in urban areas, active mitigation efforts, including policy change and outreach programs must be made to reduce the risk of birds colliding with surrounding built structures.
