Abstract:This study investigates the characteristics and threats to ancient trees in Chaonan District, Shantou, aiming to provide data support for their conservation in eastern Guangdong. A total of 141 ancient trees were identified, belonging to 15 families, 16 genera, and 16 species. The dominant species is Ficus microcarpa. Grade Ⅰ , Ⅱ , and Ⅲ trees number 5, 11, and 125, respectively. The age structure exhibits a pyramidal pattern, with an average age of 193 years and the oldest tree, Cordia dichotoma, estimated at 700 years. The average height, diameter at breast height, and crown width are 14.45 m, 392.86 cm, and 16.83 m, respectively. All 11 towns (streets) host ancient trees, forming three high-density clusters in the north (Xiashan Street) and the southwest (Hongchang Town), with a maximum density of 1.32 trees/km2. Most trees exhibit good vitality and habitat quality. However, 8 towns have ancient trees with 'medium' and 'poor' growth environments; damage and rot of trunk or branch and hardness around the tree base are the main threat factors. The study recommends enhancing the cultivation and management of backup resources and strengthening daily maintenance and conservation efforts.
