Abstract:The spatial layout of houses reflects the order and structure of human society in architectural entities, and analyzing the spatial patterns of houses can uncover the generative logic behind them. Addressing the lack of quantitative methods in previous studies, this research applies the convex spatial model of spatial syntax to quantitatively analyze the morphological characteristics of traditional houses in Guangzhou. The study finds that traditional houses in Guangzhou, such as Sanjianlianglang houses, Yizhengyipian houses, and the Zhutongwu house, form the spatial characteristics of the ‘Tianjing integration'. Through the isolation or connection of space, the traditional houses in Guangzhou construct a dualistic spatial interface between inside and outside, host and guest, public and private, human and nature. The spatial form of traditional dwellings embodies rich social and cultural connotations, including residential patterns centered on stem families, flourishing clan culture, as well as the harmonious integration of natural and social perspectives.
