Abstract:With the progress of globalization, the aesthetics of Chinese classical gardens is not only discussed in the Chinese cultural system, but also gradually attracted attention by scholars in the Western context. This article attempts to find cross-cultural views of the “other” in Western perspectives, summarize the three main stages of the aesthetic cognition of Chinese classical gardens in the Western context in the past three centuries. Beginning in the 18th century, with the help of Western translation of art works and the construction of overseas Chinese classical gardens, Western scholars had realized the transformation of aesthetic understanding from imagination to reality, through the 19th to 20th centuries. Subsequently, many new interdisciplinary views were born after entering the 21st century. The process illustrates the future research trend of the traditional Chinese garden aesthetics which will continue breaking its own linear history and return to the global context.
